More Fiber Art Design

This was my first official class on color. We got to cut up paint chips! Shhhh, don’t tell the major DIY home improvement chain. This first piece was inspired by the lovely rounded edges of the little paint cards. I’m thinking Maine lupine under a blue sky.

In the second piece I went with a more linear, geometric look, and wow, I’m still really into symmetry and orderly arrangement, aren’t I? Look how these are all arranged from light to dark or dark to light, and with all the same hues together. And let’s hear it for those complementary cool colors! Will you ever see red, orange, yellow, or brown in my work?

This next photo is a demonstration of the fascinating art of yarn wrapping. We had to choose our colors for the top exercise based on color wheel relationships rather than on personal preference, as in the first two exercises–hence the triadic and tetradic harmonies. The bottom exercise was to arrange the yarn colors we were given in order of their value.

I am clearly not sophisticated or advanced enough yet to appreciate the importance of the theoretically-based method of color selection in textile design. I have a feeling my work will continue to be governed by the highly scientific decision-making process of “Oooooohhhh, that’s pretty!”
