Sigh.

I love going outside in the morning and seeing things like this. I believe this is an organ pipe cactus, which supposedly doesn’t grow here in the northern Chihuahuan desert. The internet tells me they only grow in the Sonoran desert; my visits to Arizona are what makes me think I recognize it in the first place. However, the owner of this property is such an amazing gardener I’m sure she’s quite capable of having planted this one. This is the fourth bloom it’s had this year. Even though you can’t really tell from the photo, the flower is bigger than my hand, and it only lasts a day. Amazing. Such a gorgeous show and such a huge amount of effort for 24 hours.

There are also datura blooming in the courtyard, which also last only a day. Unfortunately I missed getting a photo of yesterday’s, but there are several more coming along which I will happily memorialize here.

The desert is amazing.
